Google Map Maker was a service launched by Google in 2008 that made it possible to edit Google Maps . Data in hundreds of countries around the world could be updated with Google Map Maker.
history
Originally, the service was intended to create maps in emerging countries , as the maps of these regions were poor. In the German-speaking area, the Google Map Maker was initially available in Switzerland and Austria , and since April 23, 2013, the service has also been available in Germany.
In May 2015, Google decided to temporarily deactivate the service. Time and again, users had created fake entries. For example, a user created a snowboard shop called Edwards Snow Den on the map of the White House in Washington . A reference to the whistleblower Edward Snowden . Another user had created a huge park in the shape of a peeing robot on the map in northeast Pakistan . The mascot of the Google operating system Android pees on a bitten apple, which is supposed to represent the Apple logo.
Google Map Maker was reopened in August 2015 and discontinued in March 2017 without giving any reason. Change requests are possible with Google Maps, but are implemented with a long delay depending on the region. As a result, the map material is no longer up-to-date in some areas.
Functions
Map Maker allowed the user to add streets, points of interest , buildings, and more. After other users checked the change for plausibility, the change appeared in Google Maps. Companies also had the opportunity to edit incorrect company data and company locations on the map and bring them up to date.
In contrast to competing projects, such as B. OpenStreetMap , which makes their map data available to the public under a free license , contributions to Google Map Maker could only be used in full by Google itself. Access to the original data had to be requested using a form, whereby the legal requirements exclude the use in navigation applications and any commercial use. The full functionality was reserved for the Google Maps API , the use of which has been subject to a charge since 2011 above a number of accesses set by Google.
