Gordale Scar
Gordale Scar is a limestone gorge near the British town of Malham , North Yorkshire .
Special features of the gorge are the two waterfalls and the overhanging limestone walls that reach a height of 100 meters. The steep walls are used by climbers and a difficult to walk hiking path leads directly past the waterfalls.
The gorge is a relic of the Ice Age and is traversed by the Gordale Beck creek, which flows three kilometers downstream with the Malham Beck to form the Aire . In the immediate vicinity of the village of Gordale is the Janet's Foss , a small waterfall with mythological significance.
Representation in art
The British poet William Wordsworth wrote a sonnet about the gorge and the waterfall. The painter James Ward painted a picture that hangs in the Tate Gallery . This painting was important in the development of British landscape painting.
