Gordon Barclay Corbet

Gordon Barclay Corbet (born March 4, 1933 in Dundee , Scotland ) is a Scottish Mammaloge .

Life

Corbet is the son of George and Mary Corbet. After graduating from Morgan Academy in Dundee, he studied zoology between September 1955 and August 1958 at University College Dundee , Queen's College and finally at the University of St Andrews , where he completed his dissertation in 1960 with the dissertation The distribution, variation and ecology of voles in the Scottish Highlands for Ph.D. received his doctorate. From 1958 to 1959 he was an assistant professor at Sir John Cass College in London. In 1959 he married Elizabeth Urquhart. From this marriage a son and a daughter were born. From 1960 to 1971 he was a senior scientist at the Natural History Museum in London. From 1971 to 1976 he was deputy head of the zoological department of the Natural History Museum. From June 1976 until his retirement in 1992 he was the director of the central office of the Natural History Museum.

In addition to several books on the mammals of Great Britain, Corbet and John Edwards Hill published a work on the mammals of the Indomalayan region and a list of the mammals of the world. He also described four mammalian taxa , including Choeropsis liberiensis heslopi (subspecies of dwarf hippo , which is now considered extinct applies) Petrodromus tetradactylus zanzibaricus (subspecies of the trunk rat ) Rhynchocyon cirnei shirensis (subspecies of spotted snout puppy dog ) and Paradoxurus hermaphroditus dongfangensis (a subspecies of the Asian Palm Civet ).
