Gorky's Zygotic Mynci were a Welsh Britpop band formed in Carmarthen in 1991 . They sang their songs in both Welsh and English . The band broke up in May 2006.

biography

The band was formed by Euros Childs, John Lawrence and Richard James when they were still in school. With Sion Lane and Steffan Cravos they recorded the self-released cassette Allumette in 1991 . Lane and Cravos left the band to form the Welsh singing rap group Tystion and drummer Osian Evans was hired to record the second tape Peiriant Pleser in 1992. Subsequently, Child's sister Megan joined the band and they signed a recording deal with the Welsh label Ankst .

The band's first release on Ankst in 1992 was Patio , a ten-minute collection of various live, home and studio recordings that was later expanded for the 1995 CD version. In 1994 the first full studio album Tatay was released . In 1995 Euros Rowlands replaced Osian Evans on drums to record the second album, Bwyd Time . Both albums were produced by Alan Holmes , who also contributed the artwork . These early publications show a wide range of influences and styles.

The band was often played on BBC Radio 1 by John Peel , which was very unusual for a station that normally plays little Welsh music.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci also released numerous singles and EPs on Ankst. The 1996 compilation Introducing was the band's first release in the United States .

For their next album Barafundle (1997), which was produced by Gorwel Owen , they signed with the larger label Fontana. The diverse instrumentation was retained and the band retained their psychedelic touch, but the album is quieter than previous works by the band.

This softer style was by and large retained and refined on the later records, although there were also rocker numbers on these albums, such as "Poodle Rockin" or "Mow the Lawn".

In 2000 the band appeared with John Cale in the film Beautiful Mistake , in which they played the 1994 song O Caroline Il .

Founding member John Lawrence left the band in 1999 and Sleep / Holiday was the band's last album. Euros Childs and Richard James worked on various projects until they announced in May 2006 that the band had split up.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci are the only band to have eight top 75 singles in the UK without ever making it into the top 40. Her highest chart positions are 41, 42 and 43.
