Gotafrid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Count Gotafrid (also Godofred, Gottfried) was a Frankish nobleman, in the early 9th century prefect of the Bavarian east country and in this capacity also royal messenger . At the time of Prefect Werner Gotafrid was (Unter-) Graf in the county between Enns and Wienerwald .

Gotafrid got into a dispute with Reginhar , Bishop of Passau , about property in the Wachau and near St. Pölten . It was an area that Charlemagne had already given to Bishop Waldrich of Passau and that was wrested from the diocese by "the border counts". King Ludwig the Pious confirmed the possession of the illegally alienated property to the bishop in 823 after the inquisitorial determination of the facts.

This dispute possibly led to Gotafrid's removal. He was followed by Count Gerold II at the latest in 826 as Prefect of the East. A “Passau forgery”, which was made about 150 years later, was supposed to replace the lost diploma of Ludwig the Pious and secure the Passau possessions that were thus preserved.
