The Gottesbuden are buildings near the castle church in Ahrensburg in the Stormarn district ( Schleswig-Holstein ). They are entered in the list of cultural monuments in Ahrensburg and, similar to the institution of the same name in Bremen or the Augsburger Fuggerei , previously served as accommodation for the needy for a small symbolic contribution.

History and architecture

Peter Rantzau , the royal bailiff of Flensburg, who was also the owner of the Troyburg estate near Tondern , inherited the estates in Ahrensburg in 1567 from his brother, the general Daniel Rantzau . Here he had a church built between 1594 and 1596 , which was to serve as a burial place for the family. In order to be able to accommodate the needy and the elderly of his property, he had two rows of 12 so-called God's booths built on the south and north sides of the cemetery at the same time. These became a closed system together with the cemetery wall. In the 1840s, today's Marktstrasse was expanded to Bundesstrasse 75, and the westernmost booth in each row was demolished. Each of the two rows consists of 11 apartments, which have an entrance area that doubles as a kitchen and a 16 m² living room. Originally, needy people lived in the northern booths, who received free living space and financial support from a generous donation from Peter Rantzau. The apartments in the southern row, on the other hand, were rented for the local rent of half a thaler, and the income was used to maintain the church. Up to the present day the northern booths are rented out rent-free by the parish, the southern booths are also rented according to social criteria. The old rent of half a thaler (the equivalent of around 0.75 euros) is collected as a symbolic rent. The church modernized these apartments and installed central heating and sanitary facilities.
