Gottfried Heinrich Bach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried Heinrich Bach (born February 26, 1724 in Leipzig , † February 12, 1763 in Naumburg ) was the first-born son from the second marriage of Johann Sebastian Bach to Anna Magdalena, nee. Wilcke. He suffered from a learning disability and was presumably mentally retarded; in the court file on Johann Sebastian Bach's estate he is described as "stupid". After the death of his father he lived with his sister Elisabeth and his brother-in-law Johann Christoph Altnikol . It is possible that he wrote a small piano piece as well as the melody of the aria So Oft ich mein Tobackspfeife BWV 515 from the piano booklet for Anna Magdalena Bach .

He is also mentioned in the chronicle of the Bach family, which Johann Sebastian Bach wrote: "... inclinates also to music, inspecie to the piano." Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach added: "Was a great genius, but which was not developed."
