Life

Gottfried was a close confidante and vassal of the Counts of Champagne . 1147 he took with his liege lord, Count Henry I the Second Crusade in part. During this time he was also appointed Seneschal of the Count. In contrast to his ancestors, Gottfried III was considered to be. towards the Church as benevolent and generous, but fought successfully with Archbishop Heinrich von Reims when he hesitated to make Gottfried's brother, Gudio, Bishop of Châlons . In 1163 he had the collegiate church of St. Laurent built within his castle complex in Joinville , which later became the burial place of the Lords of Joinville, which, like the castle, was torn down during the French Revolution .

With Gottfried III. the Joinville family rose to the highest nobility in Champagne . The office of county seneschal had been hereditary in the family ever since.
