Gottfried Kirchengast (born July 14, 1965 in Styria ) is an Austrian climate scientist. He is Professor of Geophysics at the University of Graz and founded the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change there .

Life

Kirchengast completed a diploma in geophysics at the University of Graz in 1988, a doctorate in natural sciences and geophysics in 1992 and a diploma in physics in 1995. From 1992 to 1994 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the then Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy , at the same time as assistant professor at the University of Graz, from 1997 as an adjunct professor and from 2003 as professor. He is also active as a visiting scholar at various institutions.

Act

Kirchengast focuses on atmospheric remote sensing from space and climate research. Here he makes particular use of occultation methods . He dealt extensively with the effects of the climate crisis on Austria.

Kirchengast calls for binding climate protection strategies. He criticizes Austria's climate policy as "negligent and irresponsible", with the submission of the national climate plan (NKEP) in 2019, according to Kirchengast, a "red line of political responsibility was exceeded". In a statement to Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz , he urged him to take a leadership role in climate policy.

Awards

In 1998 he received the Start Prize , the most highly endowed prize for young scientists in Austria. In 2014 he was nominated as one of 30 people for Austrian of the Year .
