resume

Little is known about his career. In 1801 he wrote his dissertation on the subject of De nisu formativo and was henceforth a general practitioner in Leipzig.

Becker belonged to the group of medical educators of the 18th and 19th centuries. They followed the general tendency, rooted in the Enlightenment , to popularize the sciences and medicine, with which the Enlightenment wanted to end the social exclusivity of knowledge. Because of the abundance of works he has published, one can call him a polygraph. Other representatives of his guild were, for example, Philipp Cornelius Heineken or Johann Friedrich Ernst Albrecht .

Based on the books of non-medical content written by Becker it can be seen that he had a direct share in the war events in or near Leipzig (Battle of Leipzig 1813) and was probably employed as a field doctor. Becker's painting of Leipzig and its surroundings from 1823 gives general information about Leipzig in the early 19th century. In addition to historical data, the reader learns about the topography in general. Leipzig's location, climate, air quality and weather, soil and products thereof, etc rivers . Becker describes streets, public buildings and facilities in the city and provides statistical data on Leipzig's residents (number, birth and death rates, weddings).

Becker's wife (* 1777) died in 1813, one of the two sons (* 1803 or 1804) died in 1815 at the age of 12.

In 1828 a "punishment of Dr. Gottfried Wilhelm Becker for the unauthorized offering of drugs ”.

Becker died on January 17, 1854 in Leipzig and bequeathed his house, Neukirchhof 26, to the municipality as Dr. Becker Blinden Foundation .
