Life and politics

Gottlieb Ast was born as the son of the court owner Vidrik (Friedrich) Ast (1837-1912) and his wife Mari Täht (1845-1915) in what was then Livonia . He studied law at the University of Tartu from 1902 to 1906 .

At the beginning of the 20th century, Ast began to get involved politically. He was active as a socialist agitator in what is now southern Estonia . After the Russian Revolution in 1906 he emigrated via Finland, first to Switzerland and Dresden , then on to the United States .

After the February Revolution in 1917 , he returned to his Baltic homeland in 1918. For the Estonian Social Democratic Workers' Party (Eesti Sotsiaaldemokraatlik Tööliste party) he was elected to the Tallinn City Council in the city council election on May 25, 1919. On June 26, 1919, the city council elected Ast as mayor of Tallinn. As early as July 17, however, the city council determined a new city government due to political quarrels, and Ast had to make way for Social Democrat Anton Uesson as mayor. Uesson then remained mayor of Tallinn from 1919 to 1934.

Gottlieb Ast remained deputy mayor of Tallinn until his untimely death. Shortly before his death, Ast fell out with the Estonian Social Democrats and helped found the Estonian Independent Socialist Workers' Party (EISTP). He died of tuberculosis in December 1919 .
