Gottlieb Göschke

Gottlieb Christoph Göschke (born October 29, 1818 in Piethen , † October 10, 1898 in Koethen ) was the first German strawberry grower .

Life

Gottlieb Göschke married Friederike Wilhelmine from Trebbichau an der Fuhne in 1842 . They lived in Belgern since March 1842 but moved to Köthen two years later. Gottlieb Göschke had a total of nine children, four sons also became gardeners. Most famous are probably Franz Göschke .

Act

In Köthen in 1844 he had bought a 5 acre garden and cherry plantation between the way to the bear pond and Mühlstrasse. In 1848 he bought another half an acre of adjoining farmland from the hospital. Until at least 1863 the nursery was located at the bear pond. 1877 the address was Baasdorfer Str. 31, in 1886 Baasdorfer Str. 27 was given. There was also a teaching institute on the site of his nursery.

Göschke bred more than 20 strawberry varieties in Köthen, the best known are the Hohenzollern and King Albert of Saxony . In addition, he also sold processed trees, roses, pelargoniums, cut flowers, bundles, asparagus from his own cultivation, sugar beets, hyacinths and water lilies. The greenhouse with the water lilies could even be visited for a fee.

He was co-organizer of a general exhibition of flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables which took place from June 26th to 29th, 1863 in Köthen. The Duke of Anhalt came to this on June 29th.
