Gottlieb Heileman

Johann Gottlieb Heileman (born January 6, 1824 in Kirchheim unter Teck , † February 19, 1878 in La Crosse ) was a German entrepreneur and founder of the City Brewery , which later became known as the G. Heileman Brewing Company .

biography

Gottlieb Heileman was born in Kirchheim unter Teck in 1824 . In 1852 he emigrated to the USA and settled first in Philadelphia before moving to Milwaukee a year later . There he opened a bakery together with the German emigrant Gottlieb Maier. In 1857 he moved to La Crosse and took a job at Nicolai Brewery , which had to close unexpectedly. He then worked for the C&J Michel Brewery .

In 1858 he founded the City Brewery (also called City Brewing Company ) with John Gund . When Gund left the company in 1872, Heileman became sole owner. The brewery's annual output had risen from 500 barrels in 1860 to 3,000 barrels in 1872. He changed the name to G. Heileman Brewing Company at that time .

Heileman died in 1878. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse .

After his death, his wife Johanna took over the management of the company and was active in management until 1917. After the brewery was officially registered in 1890, she was one of the first female company presidents in the USA .

Gottlieb Heileman married Johanna Bantle, also a German émigré, in 1858. Together they had seven daughters and one son.
