biography

John Gund was born in Schwetzingen , Baden, in 1830 . After completing school, he completed a two-year training course as a brewer and cooper . His parents emigrated to the United States in 1847 and ran a farm near Freeport , Illinois .

Gund followed them a year later and traveled to the USA via the ports of Rotterdam and Le Havre . In the summer of 1850, his parents died of cholera . He then moved to Galena , where he met Louise Hottman and married in 1852. Together they moved on to Dubuque , where Gund worked in the Anton Heebs brewery. After a brief return to Galena, he moved to La Crosse with his wife .

There he ran a small brewery for four years in a wooden hut on the corner of Front Street and Division Street. In 1858 he sold the hut to CL Colman, who later used it for his timber trade.

In 1858 he founded the City Brewery (also called City Brewing Company ) together with Gottlieb Heileman . Together they ran the brewery for 14 years until Gund sold his shares to Heileman in 1872 and left the company. The brewery's annual output had risen from 500 barrels in 1860 to 3,000 barrels in 1872.

Gund started his own brewery, Empire Brewery on South Avenue in La Crosse . The brewery had a capacity of 30,000 barrels of beer a year. It was officially registered on May 1, 1880. Gund made his sons employees: Henry Gund became a sales representative, George Gund became a manager, and John Gund, Jr., an accountant. The beer business was very successful in the years to come and the capacity of the brewery was expanded bit by bit. In 1897 an annual output of 60,000 barrels was reached. A fire in September 1897 burned down parts of the brewery. Gund had it rebuilt by August 1898.

Gund died of an apoplexy on May 7, 1910 after months of illness . He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse .
