History and architecture

Gottliebenkapelle Herrnsheim

Gabriel von Seidl built the burial chapel on behalf of Cornelius Wilhelm von Heyl zu Herrnsheim in the years 1888 to 1891 on the property southwest of the town center. The neo-Romanesque stone building with its cross-shaped floor plan was primarily intended to be used as a family grave. The construction site was in a completely free position with a view over Herrnsheim. The facility has now been converted into a residential area.

The chapel and the cloister are surrounded by a cemetery. The crypt is accessible through a spiral staircase and slab openings in the cloister. The church tower on the side is intended to be reminiscent of the tower of the Clement Chapel in Trechtingshausen . Further architectural quotes can be found on the outer facade, such as ornaments that are modeled on the St. Peter zu Worms Cathedral , the smallest of the three Rhenish imperial cathedrals .

Its use as a grave only began when his wife Sophie died in 1915. Builder Cornelius Wilhelm von Heyl zu Herrnsheim was buried next to her in 1923. The crypt is still used today as a burial place for the family.

Cloister design by Otto Hupp

Through his contact with the architect Gabriel von Seidl, the German heraldist Otto Hupp received the order for the wall and ceiling paintings in the choir room and in the cloister of the Gottliebenkapelle. It was probably ornamental template sheets from around 1500 that inspired Otto Hupp. In 2015, the paintings in the cultural monument were extensively restored.

Naming

The name of the chapel is borrowed from a word from Romans 8:28:

"But we know that those who love God, all things serve the best."
