Goukouni Oueddei

Goukouni Oueddei ( Arabic كوكوني عويدي, DMG Kūkūnī ʿWaīdai , * 1944 in Zouar, Tibesti region , Chad ), more rarely Weddei , Weddeye or Oeddeye , was the head of state of Chad from 1979 until he was deposed by his defense minister Hissène Habré in 1982.
Goukouni Oueddei belongs to the Teda- Tubu , whose derde (political and religious leader) was his father Oueddei Kichidemi.
He was a member of the Front de Liberation Nationale (FROLINAT), a liberation movement from the northern part of the country under the leadership of Abba Siddick , which was at war with the Forces Armées Nationales (FAN) party, a split of FROLINAT from the south . After fierce fighting in February and March 1979, an armistice was agreed in August of the same year at a meeting organized by the Nigerien government. On March 23, 1979 he was appointed President of the Transitional Government ( GUNT ) of Chad, in which his greatest political opponent, Hissène Habré (who was formerly also a member of FROLINAT) from the FAN, was Defense Minister. In the ceasefire, it was also agreed that each party had to release its prisoners of war and withdraw its troops from the capital, N'Djamena . However, as parts of the FROLINAT refused to release prisoners who were taken in Faya-Largeau and armed units of the party remained in the capital, violent clashes broke out again in March 1980. The common government was broken, but Oueddei remained president. In 1980 peace returned for a short time after the army of Chad had defeated the FAN with Libyan help. In 1981, Oueddei declared the unification of Chad with Libya.
The rebels first fled to Sudan, where they were supported by France and the USA and thus had the opportunity to overthrow Oueddei on June 7, 1982. The anti-Libyan minded Habré made himself president. Its predecessor continued to rule Chad north of the 15th parallel with the help of Libya. In 1986, Oueddei and Libya's Gaddafi broke up , followed by a war between Chad and Libya in which thousands of people died.
