Goutam Ghose (also written Gautam Ghosh), (born July 24, 1950 ) is a film director in West Bengal and India .

Goutam Ghose grew up in Calcutta as the son of Santana and Himangshu Kumar Ghose. He attended St John's Diocesan School, later Cathedral Missionary Boys' School, and graduated from the University of Calcutta .

Career

He achieved his first successes with documentaries. With “Hungry Autumn” he won the main prize at the Oberhausen Film Festival. This was followed by films such as Maa Bhoomi , Dakhal , Paar , Antarjali Yatra , Padma Nadir Majhi , Patang (1993), Dekha, Abar Aranye , Gudia , Kaalbela & Moner Manush . He produced well-known documentaries like Meeting A Milestone (about Ustad Bismillah Khan ), Beyond the Himalayas, Land of Sand Dunes, Ray (about Satyajit Ray ), Impermanence (about the Dalai Lama ). He received many national film awards in India in addition to numerous international awards such as the Silver Balloon Award, Nantes Film Festival , the UNESCO Award, awards at the Cannes Film Festival and in Venice as well as the coveted Vittorio Di Sica Award.

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
