Between Cirkewwa in Malta and Mgarr in Gozo runs a car ferry to the Gozo Channel Line . Merchant ships and ships over 50 m in length are not allowed to pass through the Gozo Canal.

Important Bird Area

The Gozo Canal and the adjacent waters from Ta 'Cenc on Gozo in the west to Rdum tal-Madonna on Malta in the east are designated by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (NU020). The endangered Mediterranean shearwater ( Puffinus yelkouan ) and the yellow-billed shearwater ( Calonectris diomedea ) are particularly in need of protection . The strait is an important resting place on the bird migration of the potentially endangered bog duck ( Aythya nyroca ) as well as the common duck and the pintail .
