Nouettes Castle

Sophie de Ségur moved with her family from Russia to France in 1817. In 1819 she married the Comte Eugène de Ségur. In 1822 the Comte bought the Nouettes Castle in Aube ( Lower Normandy ) and Sophie de Ségur lived there with her children. In 1856 she began to publish novels. In 1872 she sold Nouettes and moved to Paris.

As a children's author, the Mémoires d'un âne ("Memories of a Donkey") were her most successful book. Her fairy tales ( Nouveaux Contes de fées ) are also famous . Her early work Les Malheurs de Sophie is still popular today. Her works La Fortune de Gaspard and Jean qui grogne et Jean qui rit are particularly interesting for adults .
