Grímsstaðir (á Fjöllum) is a settlement in northern Iceland .

When the ring road was not yet paved, Grímsstaðir was the first place to be reached east of the bridge over the Jökulsá á Fjöllum . Now this road runs over 3 km away and the old road belongs to Hólsfallavegur, road 864, which connects the ring road with Norðausturvegur and runs east past Dettifoss . From here the ferry operated across the Jökulsá á Fjöllum before the bridge was completed in 1947.

A weather station has been in operation in Grímsstaðir since 1907. On January 21, 1918 , the temperature measured here and in Möðrudalur was −38 ° C, the lowest temperature ever recorded in the country.

In 2014, a Chinese investor wanted to buy large parts of Grímsstaðir in order to build a luxury hotel, but Icelandic law does not allow this. Accommodation for tourists has also been created in the settlement.

In 2016, the area was sold to British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe . The new owner does not want to use the land, but rather to keep it in its current condition.
