Norðausturvegur

The Norðausturvegur , also called Þjóðvegur 85 , is a road in northeast Iceland .

This road is 319 km long and runs closer to the coast than the ring road . It runs for a distance of only 95 kilometers in this area further south inland. The last 20 kilometers of the ring road used to belong to the Norðausturvegur when the ring road still ran through Möðrudalur .

The Norðausturvegur begins between Akureyri and Mývatn . It crosses the Skjálfandafljót and leads around the Tjörnes peninsula . The delta of the mouth of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum is circled and it continues over the Hólaheiði.

The villages of Húsavík , Þórshöfn , Bakkafjörður and Vopnafjörður are located on Norðausturvegur .

The Sléttuvegur and Kópaskersvegur, road 870, with the villages of Kópasker and Raufarhöfn now lead around the Melrakkaslétta peninsula . In this area the road is not paved yet. It used to be the Norðausturvegur.
