Gröninger Bad

The Gröninger Bad , also called Volksbad Südost , is a listed building in Magdeburg , Gröninger Straße 2 in the Salbke district . Since a renovation, it has been used as an event center, primarily for concerts. It is an important testimony to the New Building in Magdeburg.

architecture

The building was constructed in 1926 and 1927 according to a design and under the direction of the architect and Magdeburg city planning officer Johannes Göderitz . Were also involved Fritz Kneller and Franz Geissler . The building was to serve as a bathtub and shower, as well as a library for the population in the surrounding districts, which were characterized by heavy industrialization and cramped living conditions.

The result was a three-segment building based on oak piles. A three-story section to the west and a two-story section to the north adjoin the towering staircase. The three-story main building contained the bathing establishment with 25 showers and 24 tubs. The library and the apartment of the pool attendant and the caretaker were located in the northern two-storey extension .

All parts of the building have flat roofs. Red bricks with white joints were used as building material for the facade. However, the actual construction of the building is a reinforced concrete skeleton .

The three-storey part of the building is divided horizontally by the surrounding plastered ribbon windows. The window frames are three-dimensional and appear cubic. The staircase and the two-storey north wing have a vertical structure, which is achieved through vertically placed windows. Originally, the window frames in the three-story west wing were colored in the north wing, but simply white. The stairwell mediated between the parts of the building by adopting the colored design of the west wing despite its vertical structure. At the building there are also circulating floor cornices .

The architecture of the house appears sober and businesslike. It is strictly based on the form given by the material, construction and purpose. This corresponds to the typical design chosen by Göderitz at this time. The Volksbad Südost then also served as a model for the Volksbad Sudenburg and the Magdeburg city hall, which were later built .

history

The opening as a public bath took place on October 13, 1927. In March 1940 the building was hit by a flood. However, with the increase in the number of bathrooms in private homes, the original purpose of the bathroom became increasingly less important over time. During the time of the GDR , the spa and physiotherapy department of the Southeast Polyclinic was located in the Gröninger Bad . After the fall of the Wall in 1989 , the city of Magdeburg handed the building over to the " aktion musik " association in 1992 . In 1994 the interior of the building was extensively renovated.

In June 2013, the Groninger bathroom was again the Elbe flood affected even just a few meters in the north of the bath running aspic burst its banks. In the building that had been renovated by the state capital Magdeburg shortly before, damage to the technology occurred. Donations were made to replace the damage caused. On November 22, 2013, a thank you concert took place in the Gröninger Bad.

The name in use today, Gröninger Bad, refers to Gröninger Strasse , on which the building is located.

Todays use

The Gröninger Bad is run by aktion musik eV with public support. Music concerts of different styles take place. The promotion of young talent is of particular importance. A well-known previous user of the center was the band Tokio Hotel , which was discovered here in 2003, still playing under the name Devilish , by producer Peter Hoffmann .

In addition to event rooms ( live club 200 seats; hall 80 seats and cafe 60 seats) there are also three rehearsal rooms and professional studio technology in the Gröninger Bad. A theater stage on the top floor is available to independent theater groups.
