Michael North (born May 29, 1954 in Giessen ) is a German historian .

Life

Michael North studied Eastern European History, Medieval and Modern History, and Slavic Studies. He received his doctorate in 1979 in Giessen. His dissertation from 1982, suggested by Herbert Ludat , was on the subject of the official economies of Osterode and Soldau. Comparative studies using the example of the Duchy of Prussia in the second half of the 16th and first half of the 17th century .

He then worked in the scientific museum service in Hamburg and Kiel and was professor at the universities of Hamburg , Kiel , Bielefeld and Rostock . In 1988 he completed his habilitation in Kiel with the habilitation thesis: " Money circulation and economic activity in the southern Baltic Sea region at the turn of the modern era (1440-1570) ".

Since 1995 he has held the chair for General History of Modern Times at the University of Greifswald ; from 2006 to 2007 he was Vice Dean of the Philosophical Faculty and from 2007 to 2010 Vice Rector of the Ernst Moritz Arndt University. His main research interests in the context of the history of Europe include in particular the history of the Netherlands , the history of the Baltic Sea region , monetary and banking history, communication, and art markets and collections.

North was speaker of the DFG - Graduate College 619 "Contact Area Mare Balticum: strangeness and integration in the Baltic Sea Area" (2000 to 2009) and from 2009 spokesman of the International Research Training Group in the Baltic Sea Region 1540/1 "Borderlands: The change of cultural and mental boundaries in Baltic Sea Region “of the University of Greifswald with the University of Lund (Sweden) and the University of Tartu (Estonia). He has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2012 . The University of Tartu awarded him an honorary doctorate in December 2014 for his work in the field of economic and social history . This award also honored the cooperation between the two universities. In 2016 he turned down an offer at the Institute of Advanced Study at the University of Helsinki . At the end of April 2020, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Szczecin . In this way, his contributions to European history and above all to the history of the Baltic Sea region were honored.

North is a member of the scientific advisory boards of the Institute for Bank History Research in Frankfurt am Main and of the Instituto Internazionale di Storia Economica "Francesco Datini" in Prato . North is a member of the historical commission for East and West Prussian state research, advisory board at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald and member of the Hanseatic History Association .
