The Volksbad Sudenburg is a listed former bathing establishment in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located on the northeast side of Lemsdorfer Weg in Magdeburg's Sudenburg district at the address Lemsdorfer Weg 21, 23, 25.

History and architecture

The facility consists of two buildings. The older one was built in 1890/91 by city building officer Otto Peters and city architect Emil Jaehn . The reason for the establishment of the bathing establishment was the endeavor to improve the hygiene, especially for the residents of the tenement houses, in which there were no baths. The older building was erected as a two-winged yellow brick building with historicizing elements. The symmetrically laid out building has two five-axis wings for women and men in which showers and bathtubs were arranged. A raised entrance area is arranged between the two wings. Here there is a four-part thermal bath window , which is understood not only as an element of the building period, but also as a reference to the Roman bathing tradition. The facade of the house is structured with layers of red glazed bricks. The building is covered with a flat gable roof . In 1900 the area of the entrance was changed and in 1912 an extension was added to the rear.

On the right-hand side, a larger extension was built on a square floor plan in 1906, which is covered by a hipped roof and hints of Art Nouveau . The space created in this way served as a bathroom for children with scrofula . This part of the building is provided with curved gables on three sides . The gable rests on a flat risalit towards Lemsdorfer Weg . There are tower-like elevations to the left and right of this. The facade of the extension is characterized by yellow bricks and thus alternating bright plastered surfaces.

In the 1920s, the bathing establishment was converted into a day care center for children. At the same time, the municipal building department built a new two-story public bath to the east of the original building in 1928/29 according to plans by Johannes Göderitz and Fritz Kneller . The facade of the white-plastered cuboid building is structured by narrow strips of horizontal rectangular windows. The entrance is in a bay window , which also houses the stairwell. A canopy is stretched in front of the entrance. A square chimney is set in the corner between the entrance bay and the actual bathhouse. With the spread of private bathrooms in the apartments, the building's original function was lost.

The Volksbad Sudenburg is considered a socio-historical example of urban hygiene promotion.

In the local register of monuments , the bathing establishment is listed as a monument under registration number 094 15594 .
