Green parrots. As a surgeon among the victims of the landmines is the first book by the Italian surgeon and peace activist Gino Strada . It was originally published in Italian in 1999 under the title Pappagalli verdi. Cronache di un chirurgo di guerra , the German translation was published in 2001. Its success and its quality prompted the publisher Carlo Feltrinelli torequestanother book from the author specifically in response to September 11th .

For this book, Strada received the Coppa di Nestore 2002 and Premio Palatucci di Montella 2003 awards . The book has been translated into several languages, including English and German. The German edition is recommended by the website Discover Humanitarian Law as one of four books on the subject of landmines run by the youth organizations of the Red Cross from Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.

content

For many years, Gino Strada and Emergency have provided medical aid to civilian victims of poverty and war, especially landmine victims .

Green Parrots is a collection of stories from various experiences from humanitarian aid projects (in Iraq , Pakistan , Rwanda , Afghanistan , Peru , Kurdistan , Ethiopia , Angola , Cambodia , the former Yugoslavia and Djibouti ).

A special position in the genre of war literature (or rather peace literature) is occupied by the descriptions of experiences by doctors. The war doctors often work on the front line, but at the same time - as non-combatants who are neutral towards all conflict parties - somehow distanced from what is happening. This paradoxical distance makes them valuable observers as they defend the culture of peace, solidarity and respect for human rights.
