The green shield mantis ( Rhombodera basalis ) is a fishing insect from the family of the Mantidae . It occurs in India and in Southeast Asia .

features

male

Females are up to 12 centimeters long, while males up to 10 centimeters, making the green shield mantis a relatively large fishing insect. The basic color is green. The shield-like widened pronotum from which the green shield mantis owes its name is striking.

Occurrence

Except in parts of India, the green shield mantis is common in Thailand and Malaysia and in Indonesia on the islands of Java and Borneo . There it lurks on plants for accessible prey.

Way of life

The ommatidia in the compound eyes do not reflect any light when viewed from the front. This creates black spots, the " dummy pupils " (small dots on top of the eyes). Larger spots, as seen here on the front of the eyes, can be the result of injuries or signs of advanced age.

The females achieve a lifespan of nine months, males one of six months. After mating , the female lays one or two ooths after 30 days , from which 30 to 50 larvae hatch after a while.

The green shield mantis feeds on small to large insects and spiders . This also includes many species of butterflies . Only a few inedible species are spurned.

The green shield mantis is often attacked in its natural habitat by horse hair worms of the genus Chordodes .
