Anedjib's tomb

Plan of the tomb of Anedjib.

The tomb of Anedjib (tomb X) is in Abydos ( Egypt ) in the necropolis called Umm el-Qaab . Anedjib was a ruler of the 1st Dynasty who lived around 2900 BC. Ruled.

The grave has only been examined by Flinders Petrie between 1899 and 1900. This is in contrast to the other tombs of the necropolis, which were previously examined by the French Émile Amélineau and then in recent years by the German Archaeological Institute.

The grave complex is relatively small. There is a burial chamber (7 × 4.5 m), which is divided into two rooms and can be reached by a staircase coming from the east. The walls of the chambers are more than a meter thick. The smaller of the two rooms contained numerous unrolled seals and probably served as a magazine. The burial chamber was laid out with wooden planks, which were set on the desert sand without any further floor. Some of the planks were well preserved. The roof of the chamber was supported by wooden posts. One of these posts was still there when the excavations were carried out.

There are 65 chambers grouped around the grave, most of which are to be regarded as secondary burials. Only one of these chambers may have served as a magazine. Numerous remains of ivory carvings have been found in some of the chambers.
