Grave stele of mania

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The grave stele of Mania is a simple marble grave stele in the ancient Athenian cemetery of Kerameikos .

The grave stele of Mania is located on the southern edge of the Holy Road , near Roman grave structures and the grave areas of Daippos and Athenodoros , the Ampharete and the Antidosis . The inconspicuous stele, set back from the street front, consists of a base made of conglomerate rock and the actual marble stele. The only ornament is the Greek inscription ανία , which names a person named Mania as the owner of the grave. The inscription faces the Holy Road to the north. The stone was found at a higher level than the tombs of Daippos and Athenodoros, but lower than the Roman tombs, which supports the dating back to the early Neolithic period . The stele, the original of which can still be found in the Kerameikos area, was found in 1932 during the excavations of the German Archaeological Institute in Athens under Karl Kübler .
