Degree Thörner
The Thörner degree ( unit symbol ° Th , after the German chemist Wilhelm Thörner ) is a common dimensionless unit of measurement in Sweden and the successor states of the Soviet Union for determining the acidity of milk , similar to the Soxhlet-Henkel number (° SH).
The Thörner grade is defined as the volume of 0.1 molar sodium hydroxide solution that is required to change the color of the phenolphthalein pH indicator to pink (= basic ) in a 100 ml sample diluted with two parts of distilled water to reach:
Normal milk has an acidity of approx. 17 ° Th.
