St. Lambertus is the Roman Catholic chapel of the Erkelenz district of Immerath (new) in the district of Heinsberg , North Rhine-Westphalia .

The building belongs to the large parish Christkönig in Erkelenz.

location

The chapel is located in the center of Immerath (new) on the corner of Rurstrasse and An St. Lambertus. The Immerather Markt is located on the south side of the building and the Kaisersaal to the east. The spatial situation was planned based on the situation in the old village of Immerath. The parish church was also located there on Rurstrasse and to the south of it was Immerather Markt.

history

Since the village of Immerath has to give way to the Garzweiler opencast mine by 2018 , as well as the former parish church of St. Lambertus , popularly known as Immerath Cathedral because of its size , a replacement building in the resettlement site was necessary. However, it was decided not to build a church at the new location, but a much smaller chapel.

The old church in Immerath was profaned on October 13, 2013 by the Aachen Cathedral Chapter Rolf-Peter Cremer and demolished on January 8 and 9, 2018.

The first groundbreaking for the construction of the chapel in Immerath (new) took place on September 13, 2013 and the foundation stone was laid on April 12, 2014. The plans for the building were provided by the Erkelenz architect Johannes Klomp . The solemn consecration of the church finally took place on March 28, 2015 by the Aachen auxiliary bishop Karl Borsch .

Building description

St. Lambertus is a single-nave hall church with a rectangular choir and a low bell tower attached to the side . A single-storey community center is attached to the actual chapel on two sides and connected to it by passages. The chapel was also faced with bricks, the color of which should be reminiscent of the old Immerath church of St. Lambertus, which is faced with tuff . In addition, the church was built as a passive house.

Furnishing

Inside there is a folk altar , ambo and a large altar cross by the Erkelenz artist Karl-Heinz Laufs from 2014. The neo-baroque baptismal font , some floor tiles as well as some figures of saints and a late Gothic cross from around 1400 were taken from the old Immerath church .

Also from the old Cathedral Immerather the six surviving original stained glass windows were translocated . The windows were manufactured in 1891 by the Cologne glass manufacturer Schneiders & Schmolz . While the remaining windows of the old Immerather church were completely destroyed in January 1945, the following windows in the side entrance and the sacristy could be restored:

  • Annunciation to Mary
  • Jesus the child friend
  • St. Anna with Maria
  • Engagement of Mary to Joseph of Nazareth
  • Death of St. Joseph
  • What you do to the least of my brothers, you did to me

The church windows were integrated into the new church in 2015 - including the baptistery, the sacristy and the assembly room.

Bells

Four of the six old Immerath bells hang in the 16 meter high tower.
