Gradner Chapel

The Gradner Chapel , originally Gradinger Chapel called, is a sacred Smallburrow in the 10th  Vienna district favorites . It is in Ludwig-von-Höhnel-Gasse  2 in front of the municipal Laaerbergbad .

Construction and history

The chapel was erected in 1828 by Johann Gradinger as a thank you after his shy horses ran away at the top of the Laaer Berg and he survived the accident almost unharmed.

It stood on the corner of Favoritenstrasse and Ludwig-von-Höhnel-Gasse until 1959 and was then moved a few meters to the east due to road reconstruction. Finally, when the Favoriten distribution circle was built in 1973, an exact copy of the original chapel was built at the current location and the latter was demolished because it was no longer possible to dismantle and rebuild it again.

The brick chapel has a rectangular floor plan and a gable roof with a crowning cross. The facade is structured with pilaster strips and a cornice . In an octagonal niche, closed off by a wrought-iron grille, stands a white figure of Mary, which is modeled on the Madonna von Banneux (pilgrimage site in Belgium near Liège ). The original chapel was consecrated on October 24, 1959 by Rector Georg Jakob von Banneux.
