Graham Kavanagh (born December 2, 1973 in Dublin ) is a former Irish football player and coach .
The midfielder began his career at Home Farm and moved to Middlesbrough FC in 1991 , for which he only made 35 appearances until 1996. Since he was only a substitute player there, he moved to Stoke City in 1996 after a brief previous loan for a transfer fee of £ 250,000 , for which he made over 200 appearances until 2001 and scored 34 goals. In 2001 he moved to Cardiff City for £ 1m , for whom he scored 12 times in his first season. In 2005 he was transferred from Cardiff City to Wigan Athletic for approximately £ 400,000 due to major financial concerns . After a season he moved to Sunderland AFC on August 31, 2006 for £ 500,000 . There he was only able to play 14 games due to injury problems. Therefore, Kavanagh was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday until 2008 , then another year to Carlisle United . He moved there permanently in 2009 and became a player-coach . Under Greg Abbott he was his assistant until September 2013. After his release, Kavanagh succeeded him.
His good performance at Stoke City soon led to his being called up to the Irish national team on March 25, 1998. At first he could not hold himself there. After three international matches in 1999, his international career seemed to be over. In November 2003 he returned and was part of the Irish squad until 2006. By August 16, 2006 he had completed 16 international matches and scored one goal.
