Grameen Shakti

Grameen Shakti is a company promoting the diffusion of solar technology and the use of other renewable energy sources in villages in Bangladesh .

In 2007 the company received the Right Livelihood Award for contribution to environmental protection. The jury recognized the organization for “spreading sustainable lighting and energy and for promoting health, education and productivity”.

It is a subsidiary of the Grameen Bank of Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus , the microcredit grants. The non-profit company founded in 1996 is supported by GTZ and BMZ, among others . Dipal Barua is the director of Grameen Shakti, which has installed more than 1,000,000 solar panels (as of November 2012) in rural areas.
