Iori Kitahara moves to live with his relatives in a town on the coast to enroll at the local mechanical engineering university . He finds accommodation at his uncle's Grand Blue dive center , where he now lives with his two cousins Chisa and Nanaka. - The protagonist of the series, who is a freshman enrolling in the mechanical engineering course at the University of Izu. He joins the “peak-a-boo” diving club (PAB) there, although he is afraid of water and can not even swim. The members of the PAB do their best to alleviate his fear of the sea, but in most cases this ends in extended feasts with public exposure. Over time, however, Iori became increasingly passionate about diving , not least because of his two beautiful cousins. Iori has blue hair, is a good athlete and especially shines when playing tennis.

- Nanaka is Chisa's older sister and Grand Blue's flagship diver and chief instructor. Exceptionally pretty with long brown hair, friendly and very well built, she is an eye-catcher for men, but she only shows eyes for her little sister, which can sometimes take on almost pathological proportions. She is always open to Iori, even though once, when she suspects that he might have a relationship with Chisa, his life is briefly in danger.

- Shinji is a senior year student and a member of the PAB. He and Ryuujirou often incite Iori and Kouhei to binge drinking and questionable actions. He allegedly has a girlfriend who none of the other members ever gets to see. His personality is wild and he has a noisy demeanor. Shinji has black hair, is very tall, and very muscular.
- Ryuujirou Kotobuki ( 寿 竜 次郎 , Kotobuki Ryūjirō )
- Speaker: Katsuyuki Konishi
- Ryuujirou is also a senior student and a member of the PAB. The second driving force behind the frequent debauchery, he works in his part-time job as a bartender. Despite his often annoying nature and tendency to manipulate Iori, he is a good listener. Ryuujirou is blonde, tall and very muscular.
- Azusa Hamaoka ( 浜 岡 梓 , Hamaoka Azusa )
- Speaker: Toa Yukinari
- As a senior year student at Oumi Women's University, she is also a member of the PAB and is hardly inferior to Shinji and Ryuujirou in terms of drinkability. She has curly black hair and an erotic figure. Azusa is bisexual and is equally drawn to Shinji and Nanaka. Her playful and often very direct manner often unsettles other people.

- Aina is a freshman at Oumi Women's University and a member of the tennis club. Iori and the others give her the nickname "Cakey" because of her makeup, which is applied thickly like a cream cake. - Shiori is Iori's senior junior sister who lives with her parents at home. She plays the sweet little sister who loves him to her brother, but her true feelings are a little more differentiated. Although Iori thinks she is rather ingenuous and conservative, Shiori is indeed highly manipulative and uses modern electronic means to monitor her brother in order to catch him doing something that will force him to come back home to take over the family business. Still, she secretly likes her brother a lot.

In the USA it appears under the title Grand Blue Dreaming with 9 volumes so far (January 2019).
Anime
The animation studio Zero-G adapted the manga, directed by Shinji Takamatsu, who also wrote the series script. The 12 episodes ran from July 14 to September 29, 2018 after midnight (and thus on the previous TV day ) on MBS , TBS , BS-TBS, AT-X and Amazon Video .
