The Grand Codroy River is a 21 km long tributary of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in the extreme southwest of Newfoundland . Including the estuary and the headwaters of the North Branch , the total length is 87 km.
River course
The Grand Codroy River arises at the confluence of its two headwaters, North Branch and South Branch . It flows 16 km in a southwesterly direction before turning west. The Trans-Canada Highway, which runs further south, follows the course of the river. Above the estuary is a wetland on the Grand Codroy River. Here is the Grand Codroy Provincial Park Reserve on the south bank . In the last eight kilometers, the river widens and forms an estuary . Route 406 crosses the river or estuary at the level of Upper Ferry . The Codroy Valley Provincial Park stretches along the spit between the estuary and the sea . The Grand Codroy River drains an area of approximately 810 km². The catchment area of the estuary is approximately 970 km². The mean discharge at the gauge 11 km above the mouth is 7.85 m³ / s.
Wildlife
The salmon population in the Grand Codroy River system is considered "not threatened". In the river probably following types of fish: brook trout , Arctic Norway , American eel , Three-spined , nine-spined and blackspotted stickleback , lake trout and Fundulus diaphanus (Banded killifish) and Fundulus heteroclitus (Mummichog). Other typical aquatic inhabitants are the Canadian beaver , muskrat , North American river otter and American mink .
