Hotel des Bains on Lido di Venezia

The Grand Hotel des Bains was a hotel on the Lido di Venezia . It was built in 1900 to attract wealthy tourists. It was built by the brothers Raffaello and Francesco Marsich and inaugurated on July 15, 1900.

It became famous, among other things, through Thomas Mann's stay in 1911, which inspired him to write the novel Death in Venice . Luchino Visconti 's film of the same name was shot there in 1971. The hotel was also used for Shepheard's Hotel in Cairo for the film The English Patient . Sergei Pavlovich Dyagilev died in the hotel in 1929.

The hotel was frequented by movie stars during the Venice International Film Festival .

In 2010 the hotel was closed; from 2011 it was to be converted into the apartment complex Des Bains residences , which should also include around twenty boutique hotel rooms . The funds for this should come from the “Real Venice I” fund of the EstCapital Group, based in Padua .

According to media reports, the project failed. In May 2019, the building's arcades were still boarded up.
