geography

In the opening of the bay to the sea there are three smaller islands. Långe Erik lighthouse is located on the westernmost and largest island of Stora Grundet . The main part of the bay is only 1–3 meters deep. The entrance channel between the island of Nabbelund and Öland's northeastern tip and an area in the middle of the bay are 5-6 meters deep. On the peninsula east of the bay is the Trollskogen , a primeval mixed forest that is part of the Böda Kronopark . The island's airport is located between the bay and Byxelkrok in the southwest .

Prehistoric finds

There are several prehistoric sites in the area around the bay. On the northeast tip there are several burial mounds, presumably from the Bronze Age . An eighth-century ship's grave was found on a headland on the west bank . An excavation in the 1930s also found grave goods there. The stone mound that originally existed above the ship no longer exists. It was used as building material for the port of Nabbelund .
