With a height of 32 meters, it is smaller than its counterpart, Långe Jan on the southern tip. The 28-meter-high circumference can be reached via 138 steps. The range of the beacon is 13.8  nautical miles (26 kilometers).

The tower was built from limestone in 1845 . A lamp operated with rapeseed oil was used as the first light source . In 1895 the lamp was replaced by a kerosene lamp with a mantle . The rotation was carried out by a lottery clock, which had to be wound up again after about an hour. The lighthouse keeper on duty was therefore practically always up in the lighthouse during his duty. At the turn of the century, the originally used foil lenses were replaced by Fresnel lenses . In 1910 a fog horn was installed, which was in operation until 1985.

With the electrification of the tower in 1947, the clockwork was taken out of service. However, the work has been preserved to this day.

Three people worked at the lighthouse and lived with their families in the houses built at the foot of the tower. Stora Grundet has only been connected to Öland by a bridge since 1965.

In 1976 the lighthouse was converted to unmanned operation. The tower's large lantern has been out of service since autumn 1991. Instead, a smaller light attached to the balcony shines.

Today the lighthouse, which can be walked on in the summer season, is one of the most famous sights of Öland. In the immediate vicinity of the tower there is some gastronomy and a souvenir shop.
