Grantley Berkeley

George Charles Grantley Fitzhardinge Berkeley ( February 10, 1800 , † February 20, 1881 ) was a British Member of Parliament with literary ambitions.

The sixth son of Frederick Augustus Berkeley, 5th Earl of Berkeley, graduated from Corpus Christi College and Sandhurst Military Academy . He subsequently served in the Coldstream Guards and the 82nd Infantry Regiment. He represented West Gloucestershire in the British House of Commons from 1822 to 1852 and was the author of several books.

A sharp criticism of his book Berkeley Castle in Fraser's Magazine resulted in a duel between Grantley Berkeley and William Maginn , the reviewer , in 1836 .

Berkeley's four-volume Memoirs, My Life and Recollections , was published 1865–66.
