Grasdale

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Grasdale , also Grastle or Gaelic Ghrasdail is a derelict settlement on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . Grasdale was located about 500 m from the northwest coast of the Oa peninsula on the slopes of the hill Cnoc Mòr Ghrasdail . The Tockmal , which is now also abandoned , was located about 300 m to the south ; 1.5 km east and northeast of Frachdale and Kintra, respectively . A stream runs south of the settlement area between Grasdale and Tockmal and flows a few hundred meters further west into the Atlantic Ocean . The village could be reached by a road from Frachdale, which later leads via Kintra to Port Ellen .

history

In 1841 there were still 54 people in Grasdale, divided into nine families. Of these, 27 each were female and 27 male. In 1851 the population had already reduced to 34. In 1882 the buildings in Grasdale were already described as neglected, which speaks in favor of the town being abandoned before that date. Based on the remains of the building, it is estimated that they were built in the 18th or 19th century.

In 1959 a standing stone was mentioned in Grasdale, which is located in the enclosed area of a courtyard. The one meter high stone with a base area of 90 × 40 cm 2 was described as a valuable specimen due to its smooth, worked surface. A second investigation in 1979 questioned whether the stone was historically relevant and considered the possibility that it was merely a recent millstone.
