Tockmal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tockmal , also Tokamale or Foctmal , is an abandoned settlement on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . Tockmal was located about 500 m from the northwest coast of the Oa peninsula on the slopes of the Maol Chnoc hill . The now abandoned villages of Grasdale and Frachdale were about 300 m north and 1.5 km east . Kintra is two kilometers to the north. A stream runs north of the settlement area between Tockmal and Grasdale and flows a few hundred meters further west into the Atlantic Ocean .

history

The remains of the buildings in Tockmal suggest that it was built in the early 19th century. They were built of quarry stone, which was grouted with clay mortar. To the northwest are the ruins of a chapel, which is dated to the 15th century, and therefore suggests settlement at an earlier point in time. In 1841 25 people were counted in Tockmal, who were divided into two families. Of these, 13 were female and 12 male. In 1851 the population had already reduced to 18. It is believed that Tockmal, similar to Lurabus, was abandoned in the third quarter of the 19th century. In a ravine on the southern edge of Tockmal, traces were found, which may indicate the existence of a dam and possibly a water wheel . To the west of the building is a stone showing cup-and-ring markings .

About 100 m to the north-west are the ruins of a chapel. This measured about 8 × 5.6 m 2 and was located in the middle of an irregularly shaped cemetery. The walls were on average 1.25 m thick. The remains of the clergyman's dwelling may be found 32 m to the north.
