Grassy Hill Light , also known as Cooktown Light , is a lighthouse on the elevation known as Grassy Hill above Cooktown in the Australian state of Queensland at the mouth of the Endeavor River .
history
In 1874 an unlit signaling device was set up on Grassy Hill. Around 1882 there was a makeshift beacon there. The building, which still exists today, was erected in 1886 as a metal-clad wooden structure. Compared to the iron constructions previously prefabricated in Great Britain, this variant was characterized by lower costs, despite the danger from termites. However, the lighting was manufactured by a company near Birmingham, England.
In 1927 the lighthouse was switched to automatic operation.
The lighthouse has been powered by solar energy since 1993.
