Gratien Tonna (* 18th January 1949 in Tunis ) is a former French boxer in the middleweight division . He was French champion and military world champion for amateurs, as well as French champion, two-time European champion and two-time World Cup challenger among professionals.
Career
Gratien Tonna started boxing as a child in Tunisia and moved to France in the 1960s. In amateur boxing, he was French military champion and military world champion in 1969 and French middleweight champion in 1970.
From 1970 to 1985 he boxed as a professional middleweight, won five fights for the French championship and held the title of European champion twice . In the European Championship fights he defeated Kevin Finnegan in 1975 and Alan Minter in 1977 .
He boxed twice for a world championship; 1974 according to the version of the WBC (loss to Rodrigo Valdez ) and 1975 according to the version of the WBA (loss to Carlos Monzón ). He missed a third World Cup chance in a title elimination match in 1978 by losing points to Ronald Harris .
Between February 1980 and July 1984 he did not contest a fight. After a failed comeback, he ended his career in the summer of 1985.
