The Great American Tower at Queen City Square , more commonly called the Great American Tower , is a 203 meter (665  ft ) high, 41 story skyscraper in Cincinnati , Ohio . Construction began in July 2008 and the opening took place in January 2011. The client was the Western & Southern Financial Group. The construction costs amounted to approximately 322 million US dollars. Half of the building is used as the headquarters of the Great American Insurance Company. It is the tallest building in Cincinnati and the third tallest in the state of Ohio.

history

Western & Southern had plans to build a skyscraper for 20 years until they became concrete in 2002. Originally, a tower was to be built that would offer up to 47,000 m² of office space. When it opened in 2011, the Great American Tower trumped the Carew Tower as the tallest building in Cincinnati. Although the absolute height of the Great American Tower is over 25 meters higher, the roof of the Carew Tower is higher than that of the former. The building was examined by the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority, among others, including whether it complied with the guidelines of the Cincinnati 2000 Plan, a plan for structural developments in downtown Cincinnati. Final approval came on June 12, 2008.

In addition to the Great American Financial Company, tenants also include KeyBank , law firms such as Frost Brown Todd and the Western & Southern Financial Group, the finance company responsible for building the building. The building has been 90 percent full since December 8, 2012.

architecture

The main architect in charge, Gyo Obata, had designed a special structure for the roof of the building, referring to Diana, Princess of Wales . While leafing through several books he came across a picture on which she wore a diadem, which inspired him to tip. This fact also suited the nickname of Queen City. The building materials for the tower were aluminum and glass. The entrance area was designed by FRCH Design Worldwide. Sue Ann Painter, author of Architecture in Cincinnati, also commented positively on the building and highlighted the tip, which is a reflection of the Chrysler Building . There was negative criticism, among others, from Jay Chatterjee, former director of the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, who claimed that the design referred to the usual architectural style of the United States in the 1980s and was therefore not an innovation in terms of architecture.
