Markus Guggenheim

Markus Guggenheim (born February 24, 1885 in Endingen ; † November 3, 1970 in Basel ) was a Swiss biochemist .

Life

Guggenheim received his doctorate in 1908 from the University of Basel with an organic-chemical thesis on Dr. phil. From 1909 he worked for the Hoffmann-La Roche company in Basel , whose scientific department he later headed. He did research on neurotransmitters and hormones, and in 1913 he isolated and synthesized L-dopa .

With his wife Emilie Schnurr, he founded the Dr.-Markus-Guggenheim-Schnurr-Foundation for the history of medicine and natural sciences in 1962 . In recognition of his achievements, he was accepted as a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1928, and the University of Basel awarded him an honorary doctorate in medicine and the University of Lausanne that of pharmacy . Since 1960 he has been a corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
