Great North Road (Zambia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great North Road is an important route in Zambia that runs north from Lusaka to Kapiri Mposhi , Mpika , Kasama , Mbala, and Mpulungu . Historically, this is the Zambian stretch of the Cape-Cairo Road that Cecil John Rhodes planned. In this respect, the road from the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe near Chirundu to Lusaka is part of the Great North Road, as is the section from Mbala to Mupulungu as a lane to the steamship service on Lake Tanganyika , which continued until the 1950s was very much appreciated by travelers.

When the Mpika- Tanzania trunk road (the " Tanzam Highway ") via Tunduma was expanded in the 1960s and could be considered a good route to Dar es Salaam and Arusha , this part became known as the Great North Road instead of the Mpika-Mbala section which could be called the Old Great North Road .

In the city center of Lusaka, the Great North Road is called Cairo Road and has become the business and economic center of the city, as well as the always congested thoroughfare that through traffic can now bypass on Lumumba Road .
