The Great Western Tiers (German: Great Western (rock) steps) are a mountain range in the center of the Australian state of Tasmania . They close off the central highlands to the northeast.
The mountain range extends from Western Bluff near the small town of Mole Creek to the southeast, south of the settlement of Meander and north of the Great Lake to about 25 km west of Campbell Town and the Macquarie River . The northwest-southeast extension is about 90 km. The highest mountain is Ironstone Mountain at 1,444 m above sea level.
The Great Western Tiers form the border between the fertile valleys of eastern Tasmania and the high, rocky, sparsely populated and barren central plateau.
The Great Western Tiers Tourist Route , which is signposted along the Bass Highway , was named after them .
