The Macquarie River is a river in the northeast of the Australian state of Tasmania .
geography
River course
The river has its source on the eastern slopes of Hobgoblin , a mountain southwest of Lake Leake , about 85 km southeast of Launceston . From there it first flows south and then in an arc over west to north-northwest around Mount Connection . In the small town of Ross it crosses the Midland Highway (A1), and it flows almost parallel to the north-northwest to Cressy . There it turns north and flows into the South Esk River at Longford .
