Coordinates: 35 ° 42 ′  S , 147 ° 19 ′  E The Shire of Greater Hume is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 5,749.5 km² and has about 10,000 inhabitants.

Greater Hume is located on the southern border of the state with Victoria on the Murray River about 280 km southwest of the Australian capital Canberra and 385 km northeast of the metropolis of Melbourne . The area includes 39 districts and towns, including Alma Park, Brocklesby, Bulgandry, Bungowannah, Burrumbuttock, Carabost, Cookardinia, Coppa Bella, Culcairn, Garryowen, Gerogery, Gerogery West, Glen Ellen, Lankeys Creek, Holbrook, Little Billabong, Morven, Walbundrie, Walla Walla , Wymah and parts of Balldale, Henty, Jindera, Jingellic, Rosewood and Table Top. The seat of the Shire Council is in the town of Holbrook in the center of the LGA, where about 1,300 residents live.

The Greater Hume Shire Council has nine members who are elected by LGA residents. Greater Hume is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
