Coordinates: 32 ° 13 ′  S , 152 ° 32 ′  E Great Lakes Council was a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area was 3,376 km² and last had about 34,000 inhabitants.

Great Lakes was located on the Pacific coast in the Hunter region, about 300 km northeast of the metropolis of Sydney . The area comprised 108 hamlets and hamlets, including Blueys Beach, Boolambayte, Booral, Booti Booti, ​​The Branch, Bulahdelah, Bungwahl, Carrington, Coolongolook, Crawford River, Darawank, Failford, Forster , Girvan, Hawks Nest , Minimbah, Markwell, Mayers Flat , Nerong, Pindimar, Upper Myall, Pacific Palms, Rosenthal, Smith Lake, Stroud, Stroud Road, Tea Gardens , Tuncurry, Willina, Wootton and parts of Bunyah, Karuah and Nabiac. The Tea Gardens-Hawks Nest Bridge in the south of the council has gained national fame . In certain wind conditions, this bridge generates buzzing tones that can be heard from far away, which has earned it the name Singing Bridge .

The Great Lakes Council had twelve members elected by LGA residents. Great Lakes was not divided into districts. The mayor of the council was also recruited from among the councilors.
